Lesson 1

Hey, You’re New!

Congratulations!

Opening this document shows that you have made the greatest decision you will ever make - the decision to follow Jesus . You may have responded to an invitation to come to Christ in a church service, or prayed a prayer of repentance in someone’s home. No matter where it happened, if you were sincere and put your faith in Jesus, your prayer was heard!

You must know that, you have been transformed .

The way you were.

Before you decided to follow Christ you were a sinner . Your heart was pointed away from God and you failed to do what God required of you to be in a right relationship with Him. You failed to live by God’s law. You were a rebel against God.

Everyone has sinned.

The Bible says in Romans 3:23, ". . . for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Although God created us good, we inherited a sinful nature from Adam, the first man. Every person who has ever lived has surrendered to his human nature and

chose to sin.

As a sinner, we could not please God.

No matter how hard we try, none of us can please God without Christ. Many of us live our lives without even considering how we might please God. "As it is written: ‘There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not one’" (Romans 3:10).

Our sin made us spiritually dead.

Although God loved us very much, we rejected His love. Why? We choose to please ourself rather that to please Him. When we sinned our heart became hard and died. Ephesians 2:1-3 says, "As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath."

But God still loves us!

The amazing thing is that God really does love us no matter where we have been or what we have done. There is no sin that is bigger than God! It is remarkable that He both truth and love . Therefore, He is both just and merciful .

How do we really know God loves us!

What is the proof of God’s love? That is answered in Romans 5:8, "But God demonstrated His own love for us this way: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

Jesus Christ willingly died on the cross for us. Now the scales of justice have been balanced and we can go free!

However, if He had stayed in the grave the victory would not have been complete. Christ rose from the dead. Because He lives we can live also . . . abundantly now and eternally in heaven.

How does someone get God’s favor?

Christ’s death and resurrection was God’s part. We cannot save ourselves, only Jesus is the Savior. Ephesians 2:8,9 says, "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this is not from yourself, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast, it is the gift of God."

His favor to us is a gift. The word "grace" means given favor . God loves us just because He is love.

But what do we have to do?

Our part is to believe in Jesus and that He will keep His promise to save us. Romans 10:9 says, "If you will confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." We must also invite Him into our hearts. God’s promise to everyone is this: "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved" (Romans 10:13).

God is waiting for everyone to turn away from sin and to turn to surrender Him!.

You are a new person!

Now you can live knowing that you are a different person than you were before. "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold all things have become new" (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Enjoy your New Life!
