Lesson 7

Who Jesus Really Is

As Christians we are identified by name with the Lord Jesus Christ. The term "Christian" means "little Christ." "Christ" is the Greek derivative of the Hebrew word "Messiah" meaning "the anointed One." Therefore, "Christ" is not His name, as such, but is His title. The name "Jesus" is the Greek form of "Joshua" which means "the Lord saves." "The Lord" is a reference to our relationship with Him as our Master or Boss. (English equivalents of words used- traditional spellings vary)

Ten Facts About The Lord Jesus Christ

  1. Jesus was born of a virgin , was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and is completely human and completely God. Luke 1:26-38; Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23; Colossians 1:15-20; Titus 2:13; 2 Peter 1:1) As such He has no beginning nor end. (John 1:1, 14; 3;13, 32; 6:51; 17:5; Colossians 1:15-20; Revelation 1:8)
  2. Jesus fulfilled over 300 specific prophecies recorded in the Old Testament which were given hundreds of years before His birth. (Deuteronomy 18:25-26; Psalm 2:2; Isaiah 9:1-7; 11; 42:1-9; 53; 61:1-3; Micah 5:2)
  3. Jesus came "to seek and to save those who are lost" (Luke 19:10); to destroy the works of the evil one (1 John 3:8); was anointed to preach the Gospel to the poor; to bind up the brokenhearted; proclaim freedom to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind; to release the oppressed; and to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor. (Luke 4:18, 19)
  4. Jesus lived a sinless life although he was tempted in all areas like we are. (Hebrews 2:18; 4:15)
  5. Jesus healed many people of different diseases (Matthew 8:14-17; 20:29-34; Mark 5:25-29; 8:22-26; Luke 5:18-25; 7:24-30; John 9:1-7), raised the dead (Matthew 9:18-26; Mark 5:22-24, 38-42; John 11:1-44), and performed other miracles while He was on the earth (Matthew 8:23-27; 14:25; Mark 6:35-44; 8:1-9; 11:12-14; Luke 5:4-11; John 2:1-11; 21:1-11)
  6. Jesus willingly gave His life for us (Mark 10:45; John 10:15,18) and was the only possible sacrifice which could provide payment for our sins. (Hebrews 10:1-18)
  7. Jesus rose again from the dead on the morning of the third day after His death on the cross. (Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, John 20,
  8. I Corinthians 15)

  9. Jesus ascended through the clouds in the sky. (Mark 15:19; Luke 24:50, 51; Acts 1:1-9)
  10. Jesus is sitting at the right hand of God the Father in heaven and continues to intercede for us there. (Romans 8:34)
  11. Jesus promised to return to take to heaven those who belong to Him. (John 14:1-3; Acts 1:11; I Thessalonians 4:13-18)

The Roles of Jesus

Jesus fulfilled three important roles or offices, which were prophesied from the Old Testament: Prophet, Priest, and King.

Prophet

Jesus was more than a prophet, but He definitely was a prophet: one who foretells the future and who forth tells instructions and warnings from God. God spoke to Moses a promise of Jesus who was to come as a prophet: "I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers; I will put my words in His mouth, and He will tell them everything I command Him."(Deuteronomy 18:18) Jesus definitely spoke on behalf of the Father (Matthew 11:27; 13:52-58; 17:5; John 3:35; 17:1-5).

Priest

Jesus is not only the perfect sacrifice for our sins, but now is our heavenly High Priest: one who mediates or negotiates on behalf of another . Hebrews 7:23-25 explains, "Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. Therefore, he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them." It is great news to know that now God the Father is not looking at our sin, but is looking at the sacrifice of Jesus and listening to the intercession of His Son for us!

King

Not only is Jesus the ultimate Prophet and Priest, He is also the ultimate King. Although people wanted to make Him a political king when He was on the earth, He refused because as He said, "My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place." (John 18:36) His kingdom is spiritual in nature, entered by faith, operated in love , and empowered by the Holy Spirit. In Revelation 19:16 Jesus is revealed as King of kings and Lord of lords. We are His royal subjects.

Jesus Is Alive!

In Revelation 1:17& 18 Jesus says, "I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead and am alive for ever and ever!" Hebrews 13:8 proclaims, "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today, and forever." He is still at the right hand of the Father in heaven interceding for us. However, He also lives in our hearts by the Holy Spirit .(John 17:12; Romans 8:10; Colossians 1:27)

Jesus is Available !

Christ is close to us. Just a prayer away. We need not be nervous or self-conscious in His presence. He is so "down-to-earth" that He was born in a barn! He is totally

approachable ! Of course, we esteem and respect Him highly because He is God and our King.

How should we respond to Him?

The Bible tells us that fearing the Lord is the first smart step we can take. "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." (Proverbs 1:7) We must respect Him as the Master of our lives. Our eternal destiny is in His hands.

Secondly, we must worship Him following the example of many in the Bible. (Matthew 2:11; 8:2; 9:18; Mark 15:19; Luke 24:52) We are exhorted to worship: "...true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him." (John 4:23)

Thirdly, we must love Him. Jesus is very easy to love! "We love him because he first loved us." (I John 4:19) To love the Lord is the "number one" commandment. (Mark 12:30)

Finally, we are to obey Him.

Jesus said, "If you love me, you will obey what I command." (John 14:15) Obedience is the real test of our love for the Lord!

All that we will ever need is found in Christ! What a wonderful Lord Jesus really is!
