Lesson 9

There’s Work To Do, So Everybody Share

Now that we have been saved from sin, God has something for us to do . The job God has given to us is that we express His love to the world.

We are soldiers who have received orders.

The Bible uses the analogy of ourselves as soldiers in an army under the authority of the Lord as Commander-in-Chief (Ephesians 6; 2 Timothy 2:4). People are not our enemy. Instead, we are wrestling against evil spirits who are deceiving and tormenting people who Jesus died to save. We have been given the opportunity to tell people the good news that Jesus can set them free.

The "Great Commission"

Just before Jesus went back to heaven He gave this command:

"All authority in heaven and earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." (Matthew 28:18-20)

"Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will get well." (Mark 16:15-18)

"This is what is written: the Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high." (Luke 24:45-49)

Notice this is the last instruction that Jesus gave before He went back to Heaven, indicating its importance.

We must also notice that this instruction was a command , not a suggestion .

Everybody share!

There are several stories Jesus told to illustrate our involvement in the spread of God’s Kingdom on earth.

  1. We scatter seed .

There is a parable about a farmer who scattered seed over a large area of ground

(Matthew 13; Mark 8; Luke 10). In the times when Jesus spoke, farmers had not

yet learned to plant seed in rows, so they scattered it around by hand.

There were four kinds of soil where the seeds were scattered, with four different results:

    • The Path The result was that the seed was never able to go down into the

ground at all. Birds came and ate them.

    • Rocky Ground These plants grew up quickly but were soon scorched by the heat

because they had no root.

    • Weeds These plants started to grow but were choked by weeds.
    • Good Soil Those plants came up and produced a great crop of fruit--30, 60,

and 100 times what was originally planted.

Jesus explained that the seed is the Word of God and the soil is the heart of people who hear the word. Then Jesus explained what happens to each type of person: (1.) The PATH is the heart of those who hear the message but reject it immediately. (2.) ROCKY GROUND is the heart of those who receive the message gladly and are saved. When they are __persecuted by others, they die again spiritually because they did not let God’s Word go deep into their heart. (3.) Some receive the word but there are WEEDS which choke the spiritual life and nourishment from their relationship with God. (4.) GOOD SOIL is the heart of those who hear and receive the message and continue with God and become productive Christians. May we all have the heart of good soil which produces 30, 60, and 100 percent increase!

  1. We are salt .
  2. Jesus said, "You are the salt of the earth" (Matthew 5:13).

Remember that, like seeds, salt is scattered . Our lives, like salt, are to make a

difference for our Lord in at least three ways wherever He places us. We are to:

    1. Give flavor

    2. Preserve

    3. Make thirsty

  3. We are light
  4. Jesus said, "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.

Neither do men light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on

its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the room. In the same way, let your

light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your

Father in heaven" (Matthew 5:14-17). Let’s let the light of God shine through

our lives to help those around us living in darkness.

    What’s the message?

The core of the message of what people need to know and what they must do to be saved is as simple as A, B, C.

  5. They must admit that they are a sinner . No one gets help unless they admit they need help. Humbling? Yes. But in James 4:6 we are reminded, "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble." Romans 3:23 says "...for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." It gets worse. Because God is a fair judge He must punish the guilty. Therefore, we are all under His wrath because we have sinned. Romans 6:23 states, "For the wages of sin is death." The ultimate consequence of our sin is a state of eternal death .
  6. They must believe that Jesus Christ is the only One who can help...that the sacrifice
  7. He made by dying on the cross is the only substitution good enough to pay the

ransom price for our freedom from sin and spiritual death. The rest of Romans 6:23

says, "...but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ, our Lord."

  8. They must repent of their sins. After Peter preached, people asked, "What
  9. should we do?" His answer was, "Repent and be baptized every one of you,

in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will

receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:38). To repent means to change

your mind; to turn around and go the opposite direction.

  10. They must confess with their mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord. Romans 10:9 says,

"That if you will confess with your mouth ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in

your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." This is

a matter of speaking our faith that Christ’s death on the cross provides for us

a new start with Him.

You can lead your friends in a simple prayer like this:

"Dear God, I come to you a sinner. I am sorry for ignoring you and for violating

your laws. Please have mercy upon me and cleanse me of all sin. I believe Jesus Christ died for me and I accept His sacrifice for my sins. I receive you now as Savior and Lord of my life forever. Amen."

You can make the difference!

It is not right that we receive eternal life and not share it with others. Presenting Jesus to an unsaved friend is not difficult. You can start by simply telling how Christ is making a difference in your life. Plan to start today!

"Neither doctrinal purity nor diligent labor will ever be a substitute for passionate devotion to God."
